1WHAT IS CHIN AUGMENTATION?
Chin augmentation also known as ‘Mentoplasty’, is a surgical cosmetic procedure to reshape the chin either by placing an implant or adjusting the facial bones in order to achieve an enhanced chin and balanced face appearance.

4WHAT DO I NEED TO DO PRIOR TO THE SURGERY?
We will ask the patients to prepare for the chin augmentation procedure in advance in order to ensure for the procedure to be as smoothly as possible before and after. Some of the instructions that may be required from the patients are as follows:

⦁ Blood testing will be required to evaluate general health status prior to the surgery and EKG may also be requested from your surgeon

⦁ Avoid all sorts of blood thinners and certain anti-inflammatory drugs at least 10 days prior to the surgery as they might increase bleeding and bruising

⦁ Stop smoking both nicotine or marijuana at least two weeks prior to the surgery as it can delay the healing process. If you are a heavy smoker, we will try to encourage you to avoid smoking as much as possible prior to the surgery

⦁ Avoid alcohol at least 1 week prior to the surgery as it may prolong the swelling

⦁ Avoid taking any herbal supplements such as fish oil, garlic extract and Vitamin E 10 days before the surgery as these may prolong the bleeding

⦁ Drink plenty of water in the days approaching the surgery

⦁ Sleep well the night of the surgery

⦁ Ensure to have cold compresses ready to use after the surgery

⦁ Wear comfortable and loose clothes and not wear jewelry and necklaces at the day of the surgery

⦁ Do not eat or drink anything 8 hours prior to the surgery except any prescribed medication

⦁ Ensure picking up the prescribed post operative medications prior to the surgery

⦁ Ensure that the bed in pre-arranged with plenty of pillows as elevation of the head will reduce swelling after the surgery

⦁ Ensure that a family member or a friend is arranged to take care is available to stay with you for assistance the night after the surgery

⦁ Do not wear any lotion, perfume, makeup and sort cosmetic products at the day of the surgery

5WHAT ARE THE TYPES OF CHIN AUGMENTATION SURGERY?
Chin augmentation procedures are performed either by placing implants or reshaping the bones to achieve a desired effect which the two options outlined below.

⦁ CHIN IMPLANTS

Implants are appropriate for patients who have a receding, under projected or relatively mild or moderate small chins. During the procedure, incision is made outside under the chin or inside the mouth along the jawline. Once the pocket is created, implant is inserted by gently stretching the tissue. The pocket is then closed with sutures and in some cases micro screws made of titanium is also used to prevent migration of the implants. While silicone remains the most common material used for implants, materials made of medpor, gore-tex and acellular dermal matrix are also preferred by some surgeons. Chin implants commonly combined with neck liposuction and rhinoplasty (nose surgery) to achieve enhanced results.

⦁ SLIDING GENIOPLASTY

Sliding genioplasty is also known as ‘Chin augmentation surgery’. It is appropriate for patients who have overly receded chins, asymmetrical and small chins for implants.During this procedure, an incision is made inside the mouth, behind the lower lip. Part of the chin bone is removed forward and/or lengthened vertically to a desired position. Once moved, it is hold by screws to prevent mobility. This type of chin augmentation is capable of correcting complex chin abnormalities. It is more invasive than a chin implant with a slightly longer recovery period.

7WHAT IS EXPECTED IMMEDIATELY AFTER THE SURGERY?

8 HOW LONG IS THE CHIN AUGMENTATION SURGERY TAKE?
The length of the surgery is typically between half an hour to an hour whether chin augmentation surgery is performed alone. Since it is very common to undergo chin augmentation combined with other various type of facial cosmetic procedures, the length of the procedure may take longer depending on the number of different procedures as well as the extent of each of them. Moreover, revision chin augmentation may take slightly longer due to the corrections need to be made.

12HOW LONG IS THE RECOVERY TIME?

It is recommended to keep your head elevated, may be to sleep with three or four pillows for the first few days for the swelling to subside more faster. Chewing will most likely to be limited, hard chewing may need to be avoided for the first two weeks. Soft food and liquid diet may be recommended for the first few days depending on the location of the incision site whether under the chin or inside the mouth. Alcohol and all kinds of blood thinner medications should be avoided for a week., whereas smoking should be avoided for at least 2 weeks and even better a couple of weeks more to fasten the recovery period and achieve better results. Moreover, the regular use of sunscreen for several months is important to prevent sunburn. Recovery period averages 7-10 days for most of the patients from a chin augmentation.
13SHOULD I NEED TO STAY IN THE HOSPITAL AFTER CHIN AUGMENTATION?
It is typically an outpatient procedure meaning that it is not required to stay at the hospital overnight.
14WHEN WILL THE STITCHES REMOVED?
The stitches will be typically removed within 5-7 days after surgery if they are not dissolvable type.
15WHEN CAN I GO BACK TO WORK?
Although you may feel well enough within only couple of days, it is recommended to return for a job within 5-7 days following the surgery to allow for the incisions to heal. Most of the patients are able to return the job within 3-5 days.
16CAN I DRIVE AFTER THE SURGERY?
It is recommended not to drive before 48 hours following the surgery.
17WHEN CAN I HAVE A SHOWER AFTER THE SURGERY?
It is typically allowed to take a cool shower the next day following a chin augmentation procedure.
18WHEN CAN I START EXERCISING?
Light exercises can be resumed generally within few days after the surgery, whereas strenuous exercises such as running for at least 2 weeks and heavy lifting should be avoided for at least 3 weeks following the surgery. Contact sports are usually allowed after 6weeks following the surgery.
19IS THERE AN ALTERNATIVE OPTION TO CHIN AUGMENTATION?
Fillers may be a temporary solution to improve the appearance of chin, whereas submental liposuction can also change the shape of the jawline. However, the results are not likely to be as effective as a chin augmentation procedure. On the other hand, orthodontics surgery can make an alteration in the teeth structure that can change the shape of the jawline and the chin accordingly. Nevertheless, it may take several years for the results to be achieved. Consequently, chin augmentation procedure remains to be the most effective and permanent solution to achieve well chin contour.
20CAN CHIN AUGMENTATION COMBINED WITH OTHER PROCEDURES?
